Texasin kanssa ei ryppyillä - Don't mess with Texas

Kuten jo edellisen blogin lopussa selvisi, karhut ja sotaveteraanit jättivät meidät rauhaan nukkuessamme teltoissamme Taosissa. Kömmimme aikaisin aamusta esiin viileään ja kosteaan pohjoisen New Mexicon ilmaan. Telttamme olivat kosteat, ja ripustimme ne yhden scrabblen ajaksi puihin odottamaan auringon kiipeämistä laakson reunan yläpuolelle.

Lopulta saimme kamat kasaan ja auto starttasi kiitettävän aikaisin kohti Texasia. Alkumatka taittui komeissa vuoristomaisemissa, mutta pian eteemme avautui silmänkantamattomiin levittäytyvä tasanko. Aloimme aavistella, että seuraavat päivät tulisivat taittumaan tämänkaltaisissa puitteissa. Pian ohitimmekin odotetun kyltin: Welcome to Texas. Olimme saapuneet Pohjois-Amerikan Etelä-Pohjanmaalle.

Olimme tuoneet mukanamme Texasiin myös huomattavan nälän tunteen. Siksi rupesimme toiveikkaina haravoimaan tienvartta katseillamme lupaavan ruokapaikan toivossa.

Mielenkiintomme herätti suosituimpien kohteiden listalla sijailla kaksi majaillut Cadillac Ranch, joka kuvien perusteella näytti massiiviselta nykytaidepläjäykseltä, jossa raaka-aineina toimisivat vanhat Cadillacit.

mylvi mikrofoniin jotain hyvin sekavaa.

Tällaista on ihan aikuisten oikeasti olemassa!

Kolme huikean korkeaa liukumäkeä laskeutui alueen keskustornista alas altaisiin, keskimmäisenä 10 kertaa Amerikan parhaaksi vesiliu'uksi valittu MasterBlaster.

As was already revealed at the end of the previous entry, the bears and war-veterans left us alone, and we got a good nights sleep in our tents in Taos. Early enough we crawled out in to a crisp and moist northern New Mexico morning. Our tents we're a bit wet, and we hang them out to dry for the duration of a game of scrabble.

We got ready to depart in good time. We set out for Texas, and we descended from the mountains by midday and from there on it was plains as far as the eye can see. We had a hunch that this might be what we had in store for the next couple of days. Soon we saw the sign ”Welcome to Texas”, which cleared the last remaining doubts.

We had brought a considerable amount of hunger with us to the Lone Star State. We started casting hopeful glances to the roadside to find a suitable place to eat. Nothing came up, so we ended up driving all the way to Amarillo and finding something there.

What we ultimately found was a place called Seven, which served cheap and good food. For our concerned readers we would like to stress the point that the majority of us had salad. Out of solidarity we will not reveal that it was Matti who was the only exception to that rule. With our bellies full we drove the rest of the way to our motel.

We've used a hotel coupon book with varying success along the way to get cheaper stays. In Amarillo, it proved really useful. We got a super cheap deal at a place, that apparently had been a classy establishment back in the golden eighties. Even though it hadn't sustained the weight of time as well as some might have hoped for, it was still above and beyond our usual motels. The price, low as it was, included a spa and hot breakfast, which was a rare treat for us.

In our room we searched the internet for points of interest in Amarillo. A place called Cadillac Ranch, ranked the second most interesting sight in town, caught our eye. Judging by the pictures it seemed like a massive piece of contemporary art made out of old Cadillacs. This assumption proved correct with small changes. These changes mostly concerned the use of the word ”massive”. Our dissapointment was imminent as we found out that the ten sprayed car wrecks we spotted from a distance we're not the prelude, but the entiretity of the piece.

As downtown Amarillo proved to be almost as dull and the sun kept on scorching from the sky, we decided to retire to the spa department of our hotel. In addition to the usual hot tub and over-occupied small pool the place included a Scandia-brand ”dry sauna”. Needless to say, this kindled our patriotic passion to a burning flame. To our disappointment we found that the sauna wasn't on. After a while a resourceful couple found out how to turn it on. We waited for an appropriate time and entered the sauna. We were not disheartened by the signs declaring the most suitable temperature for the sauna to be around 130 to 160 F (c. 54 to 71 C) and thing would get dangerous at 180 F (82 C). A bit more harder to swallow was the fact that apparently pouring water on the rocks of the stove could be lethal. Ultimately the sauna proved to be the only place within the hotel that was slightly cooler than the suffocating heat outside. We left fairly soon shaking our heads.

The next morning was another early start. As we made our way towards Fort Worth we saw a huge column of smoke rising in the distance. Soon we passed a huge forest/grassland fire. A lot of people were already engaged in limiting and extinguishing the flames. Closer to the city the famous Fort Worth traffic jams were only getting started, so we managed to slip in with only minor delays.

In Fort Worth we had a terrific meal in a place called Old Rig Steakhouse with its traditional Texan and American cuisine. The prices were once again ridiculously low and as usual in this country, nobody had to leave the table still hungry. When walking back to the hotel we were caught up in a rain shower which soaked us to the bone. The day was probably the hottest so far and even at night the heat dried us up in moments after the shower.

The main event for the night was Billy Bob's Texas, the world's largest ”honky-tonk”, which roughly translates as a hill billy festivity hall. The vast space included among other things a rodeo arena, a restaurant, a gift shop, a couple of arcades, pool tables, two stages and several bars.

At nine it was rodeo time. The relatively young would-be-cowboys had to the hang on the back of an enraged bull for eight seconds using only one hand. Only the first of the candidates succeeded, the rest were reclessly thrown in to the ground after struggling for a couple seconds. When the unlucky contestant was rolling in the ground the crowd cheered and the rodeo clowns did their best to get the angry bulls out of the circle. Between the contestants there was loud music and uncomprehensible roar from the host. The whole experience was somewhat confusing.

The rest of the honky tonk wasn't any less confusing in comparison. All age groups were present and the crowd was dominately local. Everybody seemed to be dead serious with their thing. The youth were dressed up as for a night club, but your average dress/collar outfit was boosted with cowboy boots and stetsons. There was nothing artificial or one-for-the-tourists kind of feel in the air, but this only made it more surreal. This kind of a thing truly exists! Apparently you really do not mess with Texas.

The next morning The Hook Wit took set the course for the town of New Braunfels near San Antonio. The local waterpark Schlitterbahn had been voted the best in America for respectable fourteen years in a row. The heat was still pressing and it was Saturday, so it was to be expected that somebody else might also have come up with the idea of going there. This didn't discourage us one bit.

When the park was near, the amount of people and cars was just beyond our capability understand, as was the amount of would-be-german used in everything related to the park. Once inside, the queues were just mindblowing. Luckily we had the whole day. Still, the park was way bigger than we could have imagined. At one point we were ready to declare the park a total flop, but just then we realized that there was another equally big area to the east that had more attractions. That area could be reached with a shuttle bus. When we stepped out of the bus we came to realize what the park was really about.Three amazingly high water slides descended from the middle tower to the surrounding pools. The middle one, MasterBlaster, was a ten-time-winner of America's best water slide. On that very moment we knew that we had to ride that.

Everybody's personal queuing time records were shattered as we crawled towards the edge for more than two hours. Finally the long wait was rewarded with a super fun slide, which totally explained the popularity. After our experience at the Sclitterbahn, we can recommend the place to every water park lover under a few conditions. Go off-season. Go on week days. If possible, take two days. And most importantly, start from the east.

When the closing time was near, we went to grab a bite and get gatorade to fight our dehydration. The cashier lady got carried away by the fact that we were Finns. Apparently she had a friend who was a huge Finland-freak. She would probably have talked about the difficulties of the Finnish language and the contemporary issues of the country for quite a long time, but our drink-acquiring patrol fled the scene.

At the motel we bathed in after sun for a while and shortly after that it was easy to catch sleep. The next day would have a lot of miles in store, and at the end of the day we would be in Louisiana, the twelfth state on this trip.

TODELLA kiva lukea teidän blogianne, monet naurut jo naurettu. Teillä onkin oikea supersuper road trip.... Lauri voi antaa ensi kerralla matkavinkkejä meille päin (?)

Olettekin saaneet sopivia kommentteja amerikkalaisen ruuan petollisuudesta. (Vaikka salaatteja nautittiinkin runsaasti.) Kylmä Itämerilomailu kyllä korjasi tilanteen nopeasti. Toisaalta, onhan siellä vaan niin tosi kiva nauttia kaikista herkuista! Enjoy!
