Rannalta siirryimme takaisin autolle,
jolla lähdimme suuntaamaan kohti Hollywoodia, jossa seuraava
majapaikkamme Guest Inn sijaisti. Matkalla oli pieniä ruuhkia ja se
kesti hieman pidempään kuin navigaattorimme ilmoitti. Tämä
osoittautuikin kuskista melko rasittavaksi kun kolme sonnia mylvi
joka mutkassa Hollywoodia lähestyttäessä, kun odottivat näkevänsä
”kyltin” eli tietenkin Hollywood-kyltin.
Jouduimme parkkeeraamaan automme pieneen sillipurkkiin, jonne auton
ujuttaminen vaati kyllä molempien täydellisen suorituksen. Tämän
jälkeen suuntasimme yhdessä porukalla kohti Hollywood Boulevardia,
johon kävelimme suunnilleen 5 min. Hollywood Boulevardilla tutkimme
katuun painettuja tähtilaattoja ja löysimme mm. Adam Sandler,
Lassie, Shrek, Walt Disney sekä monia muita. Aloitimme Hollywood
joiden seasta huomasi mm. kodittoman roskiksessa, Bumblebeen, Iron
Manin, Kapteeni Amerikan, Master Chiefin ja muita peli- ja
elokuvamaailman tähtiä. Kameralle ja videokameralle tuli täällä
hyvin paljon käyttöä.
Illan hämärtyessä alkoi tulla nälkä ja
alettiin etsiä huokeaa, mielellään meksikolaista ruokapaikkaa.
Tässä vaiheessa astui esiin matkan ruokaparoni eli minä. Hetken
etsittyämme olimme jo luovuttamassa ja siirtymässä intialaiseen
ravintolaan Urban Masala mutta luontainen vaistoni kuitenkin ohjasi
meidät korttelin pidemmälle, josta löysimme pienen aivan
mielettömän hyvän burritopaikan. Kaikki meistä tilasivat burritot
(Mikko päivän toisensa), jotka olivat aivan taivaalliset. Ruokailun
ruokaa. Ruokailun jälkeen siirryimme kaupan kautta hotellille melko
aikaisessa vaiheessa iltaa. Kaupasta mukaan tarttui 12-pack Red-Hook
long hammer IPA-olutta.
Kunnolla
herättyämme huomasimme, ettei meillä ole piuhaa millä saisi
kameran koneeseen kiinni, joten jouduimme käymään
apple-oksennus-kaupassa hankkimassa mini-usb piuhan. Tämä onnistui
hyvin ja sitten aloimmekin taiteilla autoa pois sillipurkista. Hela
Helan
kanssa puoliksi Stone panimon Ruination-IPA-olutpullo, jota innolla
odotan. Tästä alkoi reissun ensimmäinen kunnon automatka valtatie
14:ä pitkin tielle 395, joka vei autiomaan läpi meidät Yosemiten
kansallispuistoon.
Ensimmäisenä pysähdypaikkana pysähdyimme
Palmdalessa. Tämä johtui jälleen ruokaparonimme pettämättömästä
vaistosta. Huomasin moottoritieltä haukankatseellani kyltin, jossa
kerrottiin missä lähin kuuluista In&Out-ravintola sijaitsee.
Sierra Nevadan vuoristoa.
Reitti:
Los angelesista valtatie 14 pohjoiseen.
Tätä tietä ohitettiin Palmdale, Lancaster ja Rosamond. Lähellä
Ridgecrestiä tie, jota seurasimme vaihtui tieksi numero 395, jota
seurasimme Yosemiteen asti. Ja Yosemitestahan tulee paljon tekstiä
seuraavassa postauksessa.
Haastepisteet kahden haasteen jälkeen:

After our Venice Beach sports bar lunch
we began to make our way to the actual beach. We came across a
peculiar phenomenon of people promoting ”legal” medicinal
marijuana. After a good while of brainstorming we ended up with a
conclusion that these promoters might have a doctor who hands out
recipes for the weed, thus making it legal.
It was awesome to walk on the super
silky beach. Lauri and myself went for a swim in the Pacific Ocean
while Hela was satisfied with dipping his toes in the water. Mikko
didn't feel like swimming so he opted to hang out on the beach.
Running against the waves was amazingly fun and very refreshing under
an ever-burning sun.
We headed back from the beach to our
car and set our sights to Hollywood, which was the location of our
next accommodation, Guest Inn Hollywood. On the way we got a bit
stuck in the famous LA traffic, which prolonged the trip a little.
This proved to be quite irritating to the driver as the other three
raging bulls locked horns and mooed in every turn as we approached
Hollywood. They were eager and restless to get the first glimpse of
the world-famous Hollywood sign. The passenger-made noise was
becoming unbearable close to Hollywood until Lauri finally managed to
see the much-anticipated sign.
After locating our hotel and unloading
our car into the room, it was time for my and Hela's parking show. We
were forced to park the car into a minimally tiny spot, which pushed
to both of us to our ultimate limit. Eventually we perfected the
parking procedure and the whole group took off on foot to Hollywood
Boulevard, which took about five minutes.
On Hollywood Boulevard it was fun to
examine the star signs found on the sidewalks. Among other stars'
signs we found Adam Sandler, Lassie, Shrek and Walt Disney. We
figured that we had started walking the boulevard from the wrong end
as it didn't seem to offer much excitement to any of us. However,
after strolling long enough we ended up in the center of Hollywood,
the surroundings of The Dolby Theater. And holy moly Batman, was this
the beginning of a real freak show.
It was very perplexing to walk around
Hollywood in the midst of, for example, a homeless guy sitting in a
trash can, Bumblebee, Iron Man, Captain America, Master Chief and
other known stars of the entertainment business. It was good we
brought two cameras and a camcorder, because they were put to very
heavy duty use.
As the sun began to set on Hollywood it was time for us to listen to our stomachs and start the hunt for a cheap, preferably Mexican place to eat. And at this time the stage was set for the self-proclaimed Food Baron, meaning me, to emerge to the spotlight. After a good while of looking most of us were ready to give up and walk into an Indian restaurant Urban Masala. But then my natural instinct guided us to go on for another block, where we ran into a small and absolutely mindblowing burrito joint. All of us ordered burritos (Mikko already getting his second burrito-dosage of the day) which tasted nothing sort of heavenly. During the eating there was no conversation, only grunts implicating the great level of awesomeness of the food, which will be hard to top on this trip.
After the burrito-heaven we headed back to the hotel pretty early via some grocery shopping. We got a 12-pack of Red Hook Long Hammer IPA, even though our original intention was to buy only one beer per person for the night. We had to choose a larger amount of beer as they didn't sell individual bottles. Mikko and Lauri tried to get their will through to get a 30-pack of the cheapest beer, Natural Ice Light, which was priced at 15 dollars. Luckily I stood my ground as this was to be my first beer of the trip and the Red Hook proved to be very tasty and we got to pack some quality beer in the trunk as well.
We had set the alarm to ring at 9 am, but we woke up already at seven-ish. Mikko and Hela went for a jog in the waking Hollywood whereas Lauri continued his sleep and I stayed behind to roll around in my bed for a while. After waking up properly we noticed that we didn't have a cable with which to transfer photos from our cameras to the laptop, so we had to go to the disgusting Apple Store to get one. This went well and soon afterwards it was time to get the car out of the tight parking spot. Hela took the wheel and drove us up to a sight-seeing spot on Mulholland Drive, which provided a great view over LA.
We then proceeded to Galco, a shop with a stock of more than 600 different soda pops. They also had a good supply of different beers, a pleasant surprise for us. We loaded the trunk with different sodas and also a couple of beers, for example with Ruination IPA by Stone Brewery, which myself and Hela bought jointly.

After this it was the time to embark on
the first proper stage of our road trip. We took the highway 14 up to
road 395, which took us through the desert to the beautiful national
park of Yosemite. Our first stop was in Palmdale, where we ended up
because of my Food Baron hunch. My eagle-eye caught a roadside ad of
the nearest In&Out – fast food place.
Myself and Lauri had the Double-Double
Meals Animal Style whereas Mikko and Heikki settled for the normal
versions. You should have seen their faces when they noticed our
french fries, which were covered in melt cheddar, mayo and roasted
onion.
Overall the first driving day has
provided us with great views. These include for example the Mojave
Desert and the mountains of Sierra Nevada.
The second Challenge of the trip also took place during all the driving. We turned the radio on and the challenge was to recognize the playing song and artist. The Mighty Mikko was of course way above all others and destroyed everyone else's hopes of winning right at the very beginning. Lauri finished second with his quick ability to recognize the Gwen Stefani song Rich Girl. Hela and I held a fierce battle until the end and eventually Hela emerged as the lucky one point achiever. I wish the rattle snakes would come and eat my guts right now, so damn pissed off I am right now.

Route: From La the highway 14 north. We
then passed Palmdale, Lancaster and Rosamond. Near ridgecrest our
road of choice changed to road 395, which we followed until we
reached Yosemite. And about Yosemite you will hear a lot in the next
entry....
